The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, has admonished the newly-admitted students of the University to be committed, focused and never lose sight of their primary aim for coming into the University.
Speaking at the 2013/2014 Orientation Programme for fresh students, Professor Oyewole, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Adekojo Waheed, disclosed that one unique advantage of studying in FUNAAB was that the University is committed to producing future leaders for the country, as he congratulated them for gaining admission into FUNAAB and charged them to abide by the existing rules and regulations.
The Registrar, Mr. Mathew Ayoola, in his presentation titled; "A Brief History of the University", provided the students with basic information about the University, while the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Yemi Akegbejo-Samsons, re-emphasized the fact that FUNAAB was one of the few Universities in the country that has a conducive environment for learning."FUNAAB is one of the Universities in Nigeria where the students, lecturers and the Management are in one accord". He, however, warned the students to have zero tolerance for cultism and other vices.
Representing the University Librarian, Dr. (Mrs.) Mulikat Salaam, Mr. Oyintola Amusa, spoke on “Library Activities”; the University’s Guidance Counsellors, Mrs. Modesta Ofodile’s and Mrs Olufunke Adegbite’s talks centred on “Decent Dressing and the Image of the University”, and hinted that the unit offers appraisal, information, planning and placement services, among others. Professor (Mrs.) Yemisi Eromosele, Chairperson, Students Welfare and Hostel Management Committee (SWEHOMAC), delved on “Students’ Accommodation and Hostel Facilities”. She charged the students to conduct themselves appropriately and avoid any form of violence in the hostels that could lead to suspension or rustication from the University.
The President of FUNAAB Students Union, Comrade Tope Adesipo, said "the aim of Students Union is to represent the interest of students and bring about innovation and ideas that can help in the pursuit of their academics". He further explained that every matriculated student of the University
is by law, a member of the Union and has a right to vote and be voted for. At the occasion, the Dean, College of Management Sciences, Professor Banji Oyelere, said the University was better positioned to receive more awards and accolades because the College was determined to take FUNAAB to greater heights. He said the College will ensure that the proposed part-time and distance learning programmes of the University take-off successfully.
During the Orientation Programme, Mr. Moses Ayanda, Principal Assistant Registrar, Examinations and Records, gave an overview of the duties of his office which include the preparation of students’ statement of results, transcripts and Medium of Instruction while the Acting Director, Directorate of Technologists and Technical Staff, Mr. Olajide Ojo, highlighted the types, importance and rules guiding the use of laboratories.
The Head, Directorate of Public Relations, Mrs. Emi’ Alawode, represented by Mr. Adewale Kupoluyi, Assistant Director, Protocol and Passages, charged the students to see themselves as the Public Relations Officers of the University by being law abiding, well behaved, showing good comportment and avoiding any act that could bring shame to themselves, their families and the University.
The Acting Head, Information and Communication Technology Resource Centre, Dr. Olutayo Ajayi, gave the students practical tips on how they could go about their registration formalities without difficulties. He informed them that the University uses e-examination for its students.
The Director, Directorate of Environmental Management, Mr. Emmanuel Bankole, warned the students about the University’s rule that stipulates thus; ‘Cross the Lawn and go home’, while the National President, FUNAAB Alumni Association, Professor Lateef Sanni charged the students to become great ambassadors of FUNAAB.
Representatives of the College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM): Dr. Gideon Efiogbuna, Dr. Abdulrahaman Ikililu, Mr. Israel Osunsina and Mrs. Elemo Annah, itemized the essence of water resources management to include training students on how to manage water resources and studying the impact of climate change. The College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD), represented by the various Heads of Departments/Units, Professor Wale Dipeolu, Professor Michael Ajayi, Dr. Eniola Fabusoro, Dr. Adebayo Shittu and Mr. Kehinde Aderinboye, who encouraged the newly-admitted students to aim for the best.
The Dean, College of Engineering, Professor Johnson Adewumi, charged the students to face their studies squarely, to finish in flying colours,
while Professor Babatunde Adewumi, warned the students to be careful of the type of friends they keep, Dr Olawale Dairo, gave a rundown of what is obtainable in the College, while Dr Adebola Adekunle, warned them against engaging in examination malpractice. Professor Peter Aiyedun and Engineer (Miss) Olubusola Nuga, enjoined them to always read their lesson notes conscientiously.
The College of Veterinary Medicine was represented by Dr. Samuel Omotainse, who led others to the occasion. He informed the students that if they want to be well recognized Veterinary Doctors, then they should be ready to stand out by doing their work properly and thoroughly. Mr Daniel Udofia, Deputy Director, Senate and Admissions called on the students to take their studies seriously by focusing on their core courses and making good grades out of them.
Professor Tunde Adetunji of the College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT) and Dr. Ikechukwu James of the College of Animal Science and Livestock Production/Chairman, Time-table and Examinations Committee (TIMTEC), spoke on “Inter Religious Activities on the Campus”, where he advised the students to hold on to the golden rule which states that “do unto others as they would want them do unto you”.
A Counselling Psychologist from the Department of Home Science and Management, Dr. (Mrs.) Abolanle Lasode, spoke on “Relating with Opposite Sex as
Part of Campus Life/Coping with Peer Pressure”. She advised the students to understand their environment and maintain a healthy relationship with others. The Assistant Chief Environmental Officer of the University, Mr. Bolarinwa Peter, gave security tips to the students and admonished them to avoid trouble, night movement, unnecessary parties and deviant behaviours.
Other speakers included the Director, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Professor Oluwafemi Onifade, who advised the students to pick up a vocation while they are still undergoing their undergraduate programmes; Chairman, Management Committee on Transportation (MANCOT), Dr Oluwafiropo Awokola, spoke on the rules and regulations guiding the operations of school buses and while the Director Sports, Mr ‘Bayo Oluwatoki, charged the students to be active in sports.
Other speakers included the Deputy Director (Final Account and College Finance), Mr. Ayodele Olusanwo, who represented the Bursar; Manager, FUNAAB Microfinance Bank and representatives of Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank and Enterprise Bank. Also, the Dean, College of Food Science and Human Ecology, Professor (Mrs.) Folake Henshaw said, “We believe in young men and women who have a vision and are focused; which is evident in the first statement on the first stanza of the University Anthem”.
The Deputy Dean, College of Food Science and Technology (COLFHEC), Dr. Wasiu Afolabi, who also represented the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, noted that the Department was about the science of food which entails management of health and diseases.
Before the Orientation Programme ended, some students spoke to FUNAAB Bulletin on the lessons gained. According to Gbagbose Olusegun, Department of Accounting, College of Management Sciences, FUNAAB “has been really nice, the environment is cool and everywhere is clean. I opted to study Accounting because I loved and did very well in business studies when I was in the junior school. I really like Accounting and I like business”.
Ishola Moyosore, of the Department of Banking and Finance said, “My College looks beautiful and after graduation from here, I see myself as being one of the Board of Directors of a big company or a big shot controlling the finance of this country’s economy. I chose FUNAAB because I know that I would gain practical and theoretical knowledge to make me excel in life.
Meanwhile, the week-long event, which was organized to educate the fresh students on the various activities of the University, also featured the FUNAAB Theatre Troupe, which entertained the students with a play titled, ‘Life on Campus’.
Dr. Adewale Obadina of the University’s Department of Food Science and Technology, College of Food Science and Human Ecology (COLFHEC), has been commended by the Institute of Microbiology Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing, China, for his an outstanding write-up on research proposal.
The Chinese Institute, CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Biotechnology (CoEBio), recently organized an international Biotechnology Training Course and research proposal presentation for scholars from developing countries and Dr. Adewale’s Concept Note titled, “Application of Biotechnology in Improving the Quality of Fermented Cassava (Pupuru) and Cocoyam”, was selected among the winning proposal out of the 29 research proposals submitted.
The National Universities Commission has granted full accreditation to the University’s Foodservice and Tourism programme, College of Food Science and Human Ecology (COLFHEC). According to the Acting Head of the Department, Dr. (Mrs.) Mobolaji Omemu, the NUC conducted the exercise by carrying out preliminary inspection of the existing facilities, curriculum and administrative records.
With the full accreditation, the new name of the Department is, Hospitality and Tourism and the programme will now run for five years, as students are expected to embark on the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), during their 400-level. Dr. Omemu, however, enjoined students to visit the Department for further information or clarification.
A lecturer in the University’s College of Animal Science and Livestock Production, has won the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for the Best Research Proposal at the just-concluded International Foundation for Science (IFS) Grant Application Write-Shop, organised by the Directorate of Grants Management.
The winner, Mr Sunday Adenaike, whose research proposal was selected as the overall best, scored 43.3 points out of 50, to beat 11 other researchers to the prize of an i-pad, which was donated by the Vice-Chancellor.
The recipient thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the prize, which he referred to as a “booster and encouragement to do more”, as he charged young scholars to study hard and harness every opportunity that comes their way.
The Director of Grants Management, Dr Kola Adebayo, disclosed that the proposals were scored based on completeness, timeliness of submission, clarity/scientific validation, relevance of proposal and a grasp of other research activities going on in the institution. He added that the Directorate will soon hold another Write-Shop for the Third World Academy of Science Grant, which will only be open to young academics, not older than 35 years.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor has congratulated the winner and lauded the efforts of the Directorate towards the development of the University.
At a ceremony organised by the Directorate of Sports, athletes from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) departed for the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) competition, being hosted by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The opening ceremony of the 24th series of the Games began on February 12, 2014 and is expected to run for two weeks, in which FUNAAB would be featuring 172 athletes and 15 officials in 8 events, which is the largest contingent ever produced by the University. The events are Badminton, Squash, Tennis, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Chess, Athletics and Cricket.
Addressing the athletes at the Sports’ Complex, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, encouraged the athletes to strive for gold, not only in the event but also in their academics. His words: “Are you thinking about gold? Can you make it? If you have the vision, you can make it. As you are competing in the name of this University, God will raise you up and you shall become leaders of this nation”.
The Director of Sports, Mr ‘Bayo Oluwatoki, thereafter appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for the full support given to sporting events, adding that the only way to pay back was to return to the University with more medals than that of last year. Corroborating the Director, the Chief Coach, Mr Victor Oshuntolu, said the 2013 event hosted by the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was the 2ndbest performance of FUNAAB in 25 years, as the University won one Gold, two Silver and six Bronze medals. He added that the University placed 27 out of the 72 Universities that featured in the games.
The Chairman, Sports’ Committee, Dr Sam Wobo, thanked Management for the moral, financial and academic support for the contingents. He noted that this was the first time a Vice-Chancellor would be meeting the athletes preparatory to their departure, promising that the team would do the University proud.
A call has gone to technologists and technical staff to show high level of professionalism in the course of discharging their duties in the University. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, made this call at a 2-day training workshop on Laboratory Quality Control and Assurance for Laboratory Technologists. While advocating for effective service delivery by every member of staff of the University, most especially, technologists, he said “if there is something we need at such a time as this in this University, it is professionalism”.
“As professionals, we should be identified by the type of values with which we work. I believe that it has come to a time that all of us will need to be committed to the values of excellence, to the value of focus in what we are doing, to the values of quality in whatever we do and we need to imbibe the culture of excellence in whatever we do”, he stated.
He decried the attitude of some people, who talk only of naira and kobo or what they could get out of the system without thinking of how they could impact positively on the system and “this should not be the case in FUNAAB. Rather, the mark of our professionalism should be in people who know what they are doing”.
The Vice-Chancellor admonished Technologists and Technical Staff never to see themselves as second-class members of the University, but be rather proud and committed to their laboratory services and always strive to upgrade themselves at every given opportunity.“I want to challenge you as technologists, to note that for this University to move forward, it is not just the academic staff that we need or the administrative staff. I want you to know that you; technologists are very important and let me also put on record that without technologists, I would not be where I am today because you were instrumental to my research activities”, he added.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that “Professionalism is an attitude, where a person exhibits a high degree of excellence in whatever he or she has to do. Professionalism also involves showing a high level of discipline and commitment to whatever task that you have at hand”.Oyewole noted that as professionals, people do not need to be pushed to do their work but should rather work to satisfy their own conscience; bearing in mind that they had done their best.
The Acting Director, Directorate of Technologists and Technical Staff (DITTECS), Mr Olajide Ojo, disclosed that the objective of the workshop was to promote measureable improvement in teaching and research laboratories, with a clear departure from the classical tradition, by embracing continuous and quality laboratory services.
According to him, the role of the laboratory in higher education cannot be overemphasised in the areas of science, technology, medicine and agriculture because laboratories enable students develop their practical skills, gain experience of a phenomenon, develop scientific argument and formulate hypotheses that would help to reinforce theoretical understanding in problem-solving.
Mr Ojo, however, noted that the workshop may not be sufficient to guarantee efficient operation, but would rather go a long way in changing the attitude of technologists to work, as he said, “today marks the beginning of change in our attitude to work as we have started to create awareness on the principles of Quality Assurance; both technically and emotionally”.
Resource persons present at the training workshop included the Director of Laboratory Service of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mrs Stella Denloye and the Lead Auditor/Vice-Chairman, Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN), Mr Femi Oyediran.
The Second Commencement Lecture of the University to usher in the 2013/2014 Academic Session will hold on Monday, February 03, 2014 at the Professor Mahmood Yakubu Lecture Theatre, beginning at 12 noon. The Commencement Lecture is designed to inspire and challenge students of the University by the exemplary life and times of achievers in their generation, to spur them to greatness.
TaggedMaking Sparrows and Hammers Out of FUNAAB Students and Graduates, the lecture will be delivered this year, by Mr. Folu Ayeni, the Co-Founder/Vice-Chairman of one of the nation’s leading fast-food outlet, Tantalizers Nigeria Plc.
Mr. Ayeni holds a First Class degree in Psychology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and a Master of Business Administration from the McGill University, Montreal, Canada, as well as the Fellowship of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN).
His company, Tantalizers Plc, which has over 55 outlets across Nigeria with over N5 billion turnover, is recognized as a leader in the fast-food industry, having pioneered a range of innovations, including the introduction of Nigerian cuisines into the fast-food business.
He had served in several leadership capacities such as the Brand Manager and Product Group Manager, Lever Brothers Nigeria Limited and in the Ivory Tower as Vice-Chairman, Governing Board, University of Ibadan Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
Other relevant appointments include: Member, Governing Board, University of Lagos Centre for Entrepreneurship and Good Governance; Member, Advisory Board, University of Nigeria, Nsukka Centre for Entrepreneurship; and Member, Advisory Board, Ekiti State Economic Development Council.
Mr. Ayeni, a recipient of various awards, including the FATE Foundation’s Model Entrepreneur of the Year 2005, said he chose the topic for this year’s Commencement Lecture “in line with the Vision and Mission of FUNAAB and my own personal life outlook”.
It would be re-called that the maiden edition of the Commencement Lecture was held to usher in the last academic session, during which the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dimeji Sabur Bankole, delivered a lecture titledMentoring and the Challenge of Leadership in Africa.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given full accreditation to the Foodservice and Tourism Program in the College of Food science and Human Ecology (COLFHEC) FUNAAB. This was recently made known to the University by the Commission.
The accreditation exercise was conducted in July by a team of four NUC officials led by Prof. Ojotimehin. During the exercise the team inspected facilities in the Department, the College and the University. Academic and Administrative records including the curriculum were also assessed.
According to the HOD of the department, Dr A. Mobolaji Omemu, the full accreditation of 5 years was given with a proviso to change the name of the Department to HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM. This will help to capture the whole essence of the program.
In addition to a change of name, the program has also been re-structured to 5 years instead of four years and students are expected to go on SIWES at 400L second semester.
The HOD stated that the new program has already commenced with a new curriculum. The current intakes of 100 Level students in the 2013/2014 academic session, the returning 200Level and 300Level students will run the new program of HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM for 5 years. However, the graduating 400 Level students and students currently in 400 Level will still run and graduate with the FOODSERVICE AND Tourism curriculum and structure.
Students are encouraged to go to the department of HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM (HTM) for further clarifications.
Have you heard that the University has just introduced new Smart Identity Cards to replace the Identity Cards used by members of staff? If you are yet to be captured, you are requested to be physically present for data capture at the Information and Communication Technology Resource Centre (ICTREC) Block, International Scholars’ and Resource Centre, FUNAAB,between 8.30am and 3.30pm on week days.
Returning students are advised to check the University’s website:www.unaab.edu.ng,for their schedule dates for data capture at designated centres, while semester results will also be displayed on the website. Data capture for fresh students would commence, as soon as the matriculation ceremony is concluded.
According to the Acting Head, ICTREC, other IT projects that are ready for use in the University include the Campus Wide Internet Access, Virtual Learning Environment, Document Management System for Paperless Meetings, as well as the Mobile Student Information System.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, has advised Pre-Degree students of the University to be focused, in order to overcome the challenge ahead of them in life.Vice-Chancellor gave this advice during the 2013/2014 Orientation Programmes for Pre-Degree and Cambridge ‘A’ level students of the University’s Institute for Human Resources Development (INHURD).
Professor Oyewole called on the students to be conscious of why they were in the Institute, have a clear vision and get prepared to face future challenges. Quoting the foremost educationist, Late Dr. Tai Solarin, who once wrote that “May your road be rough”, he charged them to always bear it in mind that the road to success is rough.Vice-Chancellor, also thanked the Director of INHURD, Professor Francis Sowemimo and the members of staff of the Institute for their effort at moving the Institute forward.
While speaking onEntry Qualifications and Admission into FUNAAB, the Chairperson of the University’s Admissions Committee and Director, Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre, Professor (Mrs) Carolyn Afolami, took the students through the admission guidelines and admonished them to work hard because securing admission into the University was highly competitive.advised them to make wise choices of their preferred Universities, while filling the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination forms, going by the stipulated guidelines by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
In the lecture, Recreations, Securities and Community Interactions, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, tasked the students to be conscious of happenings in their environment and be involved in community relations., a Deputy Superintendent of Police, charged the students not to engage in cultism and other anti-social behaviours, as he warned of the consequence of bad association. He also advised them to avoid areas he tagged as ‘black spots’ in town, dress well and desist from what could bring them into police net.
Other speakers at the occasion include the Dean, College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development, Professor Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale, who spoke onExamination and its Expectations; Deputy Director, INHURD, Mrs. Olubukola Agboola, who enlightened them about the Code of Conduct in INHURDthe Deputy Director, Health Services, Dr Abiodun Amusan, who spoke onHealthy Living and Health Facilities.
The Dean, Student Affairs, Professor Yemi Akegbejo-Samsons delved on theEffect of Campus Life on New intakes;the Principal Librarian of INHURD, Mrs Adeola George, spoke on the topic,Library Facilities in INHURD;Counsellor, Mrs Modesta Ofodile’s lecture was titled,Sex Education and Sexuality;Peter Madu, discussedAppearance and Mode of Dressing, while the Assistant Chief Environmental Officer, Mr. Peter Bolarinwa represented the Principal Environmental Officer, INHURD, Mr. Stephen Akingbesote, gave a talk onSecurity Matters at INHURD.
Earlier, the Director of INHURD, Professor Francis Sowemimo, gave a brief history of FUNAAB and the emergence of INHURD, as he counselled the students to face their studies squarely, shun bad behaviour and cooperate with members of staff of the Institute.
Researchers and postgraduate students of the University have been challenged to start writing grant-winning proposals that could advance their research activities. Giving this challenge was the FUNAAB’s Director of Grants Management, Dr Kola Adebayo, during the International Foundation for Science (IFS) Grant Application Write-Shop, held recently in the University.
The Director noted that numerous international grant opportunities were readily available but accessing them was always strictly based on merit.He said that the Write-Shop would help groom researchers “to write the kind of grant that anybody, anywhere in the world would see and say, this is a very good proposal and would be willing to sponsor”. He added that writing of applications that could win grants was not an impossible task that is limited to Professors but also achievable by researchers that are properly mentored and groomed in the basic rudiments.
While assuring all that the Directorate of Grants Management was equipped with the necessary expertise to manage University’s grants, Dr Adebayo revealed that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, who is currently an alumnus of IFS, was a 3-term winner of the IFS grant, having won the grant thrice.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged members of staff researchers to be ever committed, as he disclosed that since joining the services of the University in 1985, he had won a grant in 1986 and since then, several others had rolled-in.
Professor Oyewole disclosed that supervisors play crucial roles in achieving research success for students, noting that FUNAAB was blessed with young and dynamic academics like Dr Kola Adebayo as well as the Director of Academic Planning, Dr Olukayode Akinyemi, who were deeply committed to mentoring the younger ones. He charged researchers to always write good proposals, stressing that what was important in academics is not just becoming a Professor but being able to impact on peoples’ lives positively.
Shedding more light on the IFS grant, the Vice-Chancellor said, “it is an individualistic research grant, which offers 12,000 Dollars to researchers to do research within three years as well as help young people, who are just coming into academic to raise up and that is why we believe that those of you who are just coming in should get connected to that”.
Speaking further, Professor Oyewole informed that the University was subscribed to Research Africa on hourly basis; a facility that affords academic staff the opportunity of receiving grants and fellowships. Highpoint of the Write-Shop training was the donation of a table i-pad by the Vice-Chancellor, to the Directorate of Grant Management for any researcher with the Best Research Proposal.
Students of the University have continued to demonstrate that if given the enabling environment, they can make waves in all facets of human endeavour.
Aanu Damola Morenikeji, 400-level student of Plant Physiology and Crop Production has, again, blazed the trail by being selected for the 2013 Fellowship of the Social Leadership Academic, United States of America, having emerged as the youngest fellow from Africa.
During the six-month fellowship, which featured virtual leadership sessions, team building opportunities, strengths development with leadership and social entrepreneurship experts, Aanu, alongside other fellows on his team started the “Man of Impact” Project, which was designed to celebrate ordinary men, but whose works inspired others positively.
Aanu, 19, was also a semi-finalist at the 2013 selection process of the annual Thiel Fellowship, initiated by Peter Thiel, which brings together the world’s most creative and motivated young people under the age of 20 to showcase their talents. During this period, he was able to directly influence about 100 emerging leaders across the globe, to commit themselves to intentional living, value-based leadership and contributing to making the world a better place. He is presently partnering with the United Nations Youth Advocacy Group on the ‘A World-at-School Advocacy Project, aimed at achieving universal education by 2015 for 57 million out-of-school children around the world.the last Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, he participated at the Global Leadership Summit, and later embarked on an internship with the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC).
Giving an insight on why he opted to do his Internship with the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, Aanu in an interview withFUNAAB Bulletinsaid:“I have always been a lover of communication and I have always tried as much as possible to enhance myself, in order to communicate better with others and assist others build up certain platforms.Fortunately, I am also part of the start-up team for FUNAAB Radio.So during the break, as part of the normal training process in FUNAAB Radio, we went through internship with other media houses, since we would not be in school and the Institutions’ Radio Station is not yet on, to harness experiences that we needed make use of in the Radio Station”.
“I chose OGBC and I was with them from October to December.I was in the Presentation and Production Unit and was privileged to anchor the daily lunch break show with some other colleagues between 12.15 pm and 1.15 pm.I also assisted in theof several other programmes like “Its Our World”, a weekly children programme, which goes on air on Saturdays, between 9.15 am and 9.45 am and I was part of the Production Crew for “Morning Flight”, which is aired from 5.15am to 10.00 am”.
On the possibility of going fully into the Broadcast industry in future, Aanu said: “Well, I see the Broadcast industry as a means to an, not an end in itself. So, it is possible that I may delve into it, as long as it remains a viable platform in influencing others positively”.
Barely two weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities called off its strike, normalcy has returned to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), as newly-admitted students of the University have resumed and commenced registration in their various Colleges and Departments.
Giving an insight into what to expect in the current academic session, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Adekojo Waheed, said that FUNAAB was fully prepared for the session and had put in place; necessary machinery to ensure a hitch-free academic session.
According to him, “this is a great University and we always think high. We want to be at the top always, not just in this country but we want to compete with the best Universities in the world. So, we have actually set everything in order. As a matter of fact, our fresh students just resumed on campus and the first thing is to go through the registration procedure”.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic disclosed that the registration process would last about three weeks. The first stage would be dedicated to verification of results which would involve registration at the College and Department level, as well as registration with the Students’ Affairs Office, Health Centre and the University Library.
Professor Waheed added that thereafter, there would be the second stage of registration which would involve an intensive Information Communication Technology training for new students, which he said was mandatory because, the University is ICT-compliant.
He said that the third and final stage of the registration exercise is the orientation of students which would hold from January 20 and 24, 2014, and will afford the students to get details about the campus and how to make their stay in the University worthwhile. He stated that lectures would begin on Monday, January 27, 2014 for all students. Returning students are expected back on campus on Sunday, January 19, 2014.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, FUNAAB Chapter, Dr. Biodun Badmus, added that academic activities had since begun because Academic Staff in the University were fully on ground, attending to students requests. “By and large, we are happy to see our students back on campus and I am sure they are also very happy to see their lecturers”, as he assured that as soon as the registration process was over, “you would see us standing before our students, doing that we know very well to do as our responsibilities as lecturers. We will try to see how we can make adjustments for the lost days and beef-up our students to be able to meet up with the challenges”, he added.
In a similar development, newly-admitted students have opened up on what motivated their choice of FUNAAB and their expectations from the University.
Miss Onibede Oluwaseyi, of the Department of Water Resource Management and Hydrometeorology, in a chat with FUNAAB Bulletin said she chose FUNAAB because the institution is known for producing graduates, who can stand the test of time. Paul Johnson of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management, said he chose FUNAAB because the institution is second to none, in terms of academic excellence and hoped that he would receive good and quality education, to bring out the best in him.
A parent, Mrs. Olayemi Adeogun, whose daughter Ololade Adeogun, was admitted into the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management stated that she was fascinated by the University’s zero-tolerance for cultism. Miss Joko Adeyinka of the Department of Agricultural Administration stated that her choice of FUNAAB was borne out of University’s record of proven academic excellence and integrity and hoped that Professors would be able to replicate themselves, using their rich wealth of knowledge.
Meanwhile, the Management of FUNAAB has announced that there is no plan to increase tuition fees in the University.
In a bid to promote and sustain high quality research, the Senate of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has approved the recognition of outstanding Doctoral theses produced in the institution.
The Senate’s decision is a local initiative to reward outstanding theses, having recently won the Nigerian Universities Doctoral Theses Award Scheme, organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Shedding more light on the award, the Dean Postgraduate School; Professor Ololade Enikuomehin, disclosed that NUC had requested Universities in the country to submit three of their best Ph.D Theses in various areas of specialization, for assessment.
Professor Enikuomehin stated that the University then selected and submitted the three theses after conducting an internal assessment in the field of agriculture in the years 2010, 2011 and 2012, out of which the thesis titled, "Genetic Variation, Correlation Studies and Multi-Locational Performance of Lowland NERICA Rice" (2011), written by Ogunbayo Ayoni, of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Technology, won the award.
“What NUC did was to bring the entries from all the Universities altogether and bring in Professors from different Universities to assess them. Experts were brought in to evaluate these submissions and we were fortunate that the thesis from here was adjudged the best in agriculture”, he noted.
He disclosed that this was not the first time the University will be winning the award because about four years ago, a lecturer in the College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (COLANIM), also bagged the award.
The Dean added that the Senate's decision to accord recognition to such an award would be on an annual basis, using standard selection benchmarks that border on contribution to knowledge, focus, innovation and or novelty, relevance to the Nigerian economy and development, good command of language, minimal grammatical errors, tidiness and orderly presentation of findings.
"For us, it would help us fit into our desire to becoming a world-class University. That is very relevant to our immediate constituency and the constituency we represent on a larger scale. I see it as helping us to showcase more, the outcome of our postgraduate research and it would also help an average postgraduate student to have that sense of purpose that there is something to look up to, especially, if there is a prize to win”, he added.
Professor Enikuomehin was optimistic that with the award, postgraduate students and their supervisors would be better motivated by contributing more in solving societal problems.
“For us in this University, this award really confirms the fact that we deserve to be the Centre of Excellence in Agriculture, because the theses for 2011 - in the whole of Nigeria - was won by us. Coincidentally, there was no award for 2012 because nobody qualified. So, that is a challenge for us to look back, take a cue from what had been the positive side of the 2011 award and replicate that for subsequent theses”, he stated.
Business activities within the University and its environs have picked-up again after the six-month strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
According to Mr Alaba Oloye, a commercial cab driver that shuttles between Camp and the University campus, “there has been 300 per cent improvement in the driving business now unlike during the strike, we hardly make up to a Thousand Naira gain after the day’s work but now, we make up to N3, 000.00, even after fuelling our cars for the day”.
He added that they received the news of resumption with jubilation, as he described the strike action as a bad omen that rendered people and their businesses useless and thanked the government and ASUU leadership for reaching agreement on the issue, as many businesses had folded up during the protracted strike.
Mr Ayodele Ilukan, a bus driver, attached to the University’s Management Committee on Transportation (MANCOT), stated that before now, silence had pervaded the environment, which had adversely affected the people and businesses.
Expressing her joy, Mrs. Oluwapelumi Akinola, who runs the Pelumi Food Canteen, FUNAAB, said she was happy that her sales had risen by 70 per cent after resumption. She thanked the government for heeding to ASUU’s demands and pleaded that such strike should be averted in future.
However, Ms Oluwatomisin Aina of Dazzles Saloon said her business was yet to pick up because most of the female students had made their hair from home before resumption, but she was hopeful that the situation would change, in a matter of weeks.
Efforts to reach owners of some business centres proved abortive, as many of them were busy attending to a number of students rushing to make photocopy of documents, spiral binding or typesetting, a trend which was completely different from the past, when most of such shops were locked up as a result of low patronage.
The University has commended Dr Ayoni Surajudeeen Ogunbayo, a Doctorate Degree graduate in the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Technology, who recently won the National Universities Doctoral Thesis Award Scheme, organized by the National Universities Commission, as part of its "Fifty Plus One (50+1)" activities.
Dr Ogunbayo, who is currently working with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Liberia, was commended alongside his supervisor, Professor David Ojo, Head of the recipient's Department, for his outstanding Doctoral Thesis titled, "Genetic Variation, Correlation Studies and Multi-Locational Performance of Lowland NERICA Rice" (2011).
The Registrar of the University, Mr Matthew Ayoola, enjoined the duo to sustain the effort at contributing their best to teaching and research.
